The Vonpischmeyer collection
Sculptures by Olivier Goka - photographs Bernard Babette
exhibition from 22 February to 30 March 2019
From the beginning of the colonisation of Africa and the discovery of the so-called "primitive" arts, artists from all over the world have been fascinated by the diversity, richness and aesthetic strength of traditional arts, especially from Central Africa. The famous poet Guillaume Apollinaire, Pablo Picasso or Amadeo Modigliani, among many others in Modern Art, have collected these objects or have been inspired by them until today. In addition, in a contemporary African art that is booming, increasingly prominent on the international market, there is another aspect of creation that stands out and inspires many creators: the creation of strong works with everyday elements from everyday consumption and its scraps, such as plastic, metal wire, in short, recovery of all kinds. Belgian artist Olivier Goka revisits these two fundamental aspects of African creation in his own way. Starting with recycled plastic conscientiously collected over the years, mainly in Brussels, he has created, with a formidable sense of humour, precision and form, a real fake collection of primitive arts entirely made of assembled plastic, as a nod to the history and heritage of the former Belgian colony that was the Congo.
THE VONPISCHMEYER COLLECTION was a great success with the public and aroused the interest of many players in the world of culture, museums, art centres and collectors.
